What happens when you quit smoking?

Today is the tenth day since I stopped smoking and I’ve noticed a few things since I quit.

First of all, my energy levels have increased. This may be partly due to giving up drinking for a month, but I can really notice the difference. My persistent cough is easing up and I don’t get as out of breath when walking up flights of stairs.

My sense of smell has also started to return to normal. I seem to spend a lot of time sniffing things as they smell much stronger than they did a week ago!

Here’s a short video from YouTube which highlights some of the changes that happen to your body in the first days, weeks and months after quitting smoking. It’s only a couple of minutes long and worth watching if you’ve quit smoking, or you’re trying to stop and need some extra motivation.

I’m 32, so by the time I’m 37 my risk of a heart attack should be no different to how it would be if I’d never smoked at all. Similarly in then next 5-10 years, my risk of cancer will be the same as a non-smoker. Good news!
